Acrylic Pour Painting

During a study completed in 2017, 37% of people said they enjoyed going to galleries and museums. Art is not only fun to look at, it is fun to create!

If you don’t think you are an artist, the acrylic pour painting technique begs to differ. It is something anyone can do in their free time with the right materials.

Read on to learn how to create an acrylic pour painting.

What Is Acrylic Pouring?

Acrylic pouring is a popular painting method that anyone can do no matter their artistic skill level. It involves pairing paint with a pouring medium and putting it on a canvas in a variety of ways

Colors may be poured from individual cups or poured after they get combined. The fun part about an acrylic pour painting is that the outcome is always unique.

Once the paint is on the canvas, it is tilted in different directions to allow the paint to flow. This leads the colors to interact in unpredictable ways.

Supplies for an Acrylic Pour Painting

Before creating your piece of artwork, you’ll need to gather the necessary supplies. You’ll need the following:

  • Canvas
  • Acrylic paint
  • Pouring medium
  • Gesso
  • Paintbrush

This acrylic paint set from Hippie Crafter is great for beginners. You can also acrylic pour furniture, but it is best to start with a canvas for the first time.

If you are unfamiliar with a pouring medium and gesso, don’t fret. We will discuss the two now.

Pouring Medium

A pouring medium is essential to create an acrylic pour painting because it mixes with the paint to keep the colors from blending and looking muddy.

Gesso

Gesso is a type of primer that creates a more absorbent surface to work on. It works well on a raw canvas.

You’ll use gesso to prep your canvas. After ensuring there is no dust or debris, apply a thin layer of gesso on the entire surface.

Creating an Acrylic Pour Painting

There are different acrylic pour painting tips out there, but we will go over the basics here. After you become an expert, you can try out all of your acrylic pour painting ideas.

First, you will need to place paint in various cups. You can mix paints to make specific colors if you’d like. Don’t forget to mix your pouring medium with every paint color you use.

Find a work area where you can raise your canvas and keep it stable throughout the process. You won’t need to tilt the canvas until you have poured the paint on it.

With your canvas laying flat, pour paint directly from your cups randomly over the canvas. Use all of the colors you wish to during this step.

Now, tilt your canvas in different directions until the entire surface is covered. You can keep doing this until you are happy with the outcome.

Congrats! You just created an acrylic pour painting.

Bask in the Glory!

After completing the above steps, the only thing left to do is let your art dry and bask in its glory. Because the layer of paint tends to be thick on an acrylic pour painting, it may take two to three days to dry completely.

Now that you know how to create a painting using this method, you can get crazy with it! Try new things and opt for furniture instead of a canvas if you really want to get wild. You are the artist!
