Lieutenant Adam Gustafson had served the West Fargo community for over ten years as part of its police department, recently succumbing to medical complications related to an emergency call while on duty.
On Wednesday, West Fargo Police Department will hold a memorial in his honor.
Early Life and Education
Adam was an extremely intelligent and compliant child. He loved his family, his country and its flag; as well as having an infectious sense of humor with quick smiles that always brought cheer.
Adam hails from Long Prairie, Minnesota and graduated from Long Prairie – Grey Eagle High School in 1999. Subsequently, he attended the University of North Dakota to study criminal justice.
He traveled to Alexandria, Minnesota and completed a police training program before joining West Fargo Police Department as a patrol officer.
He thoroughly enjoyed his job and was promoted to lieutenant in 2018. Outside of work he spent his free time traveling, discovering new places, playing fantasy sports, cooking for family dinners and enjoying rare whiskey with Amber and their three children.
Adam Gustafson is a well-known attorney specializing in environmental and regulatory law. He has litigated a range of cases related to oil and gas exploration, environmental cleanup, water and wastewater management and energy/climate change. Furthermore, Adam has advised many companies on strategic/technical matters, including product design/marketing decisions/contract negotiations/mergers & acquisitions.
He currently works as the Senior Counsel for Environmental and Regulatory Affairs for Boeing in McLean, Virginia. In his free time he enjoys golfing and spending time with family and friends; volunteering as a teacher’s assistant at an elementary school; being part of both the National Academy of Sciences and American Bar Association as well as graduating with his BA degree from UVa (in economics in 2005).

The Provost’s List and Honor Roll recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance during the fall semester. Both lists are compiled using information obtained from each student’s official records.
Adam holds an outstanding GPA of 4.3 and belongs to National Honor Society, Senior Senate and Student Council – in addition to actively volunteering his services within his community.
Last spring, he earned a CoSIDA Academic All-District designation in track and field as well as being awarded with College Sports Information Directors of America Division III Academic All-America honors for his accomplishments this season.
Adam Gustafson was known for being a hardworking individual with strong family ties who also enjoyed traveling, food, fantasy sports, cooking, and rare whiskey collections.
He joined the West Fargo Police Department as a patrol officer in 2009 and quickly progressed through to become lieutenant by 2018.
Adam relished spending time with Amber and their children; he was an attentive husband, father, brother and uncle.
His passion for law enforcement drove him to pursue a degree in criminal justice at college before going on to complete the Law Enforcement Skills Program in Alexandria, Minnesota in order to become licensed peace officer.

On Wednesday, hundreds of friends, family, and colleagues turned out for Lieutenant Gustafson’s funeral service in West Fargo. Attendees expressed their respect and recalled him as being an outstanding member of West Fargo Police Department as well as a compassionate individual who made an impressionful difference in people’s lives.
