Adams recently told WW that he advocates for hyperlocal trash pickup where neighborhood contractors would be responsible for specific areas. City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has expressed support for this option and intends to discuss it with the mayor’s office.

Adams has spearheaded an award-winning curbside composting program at DSNY that successfully diverted three times more organic waste at a lower cost than older programs, and currently overseeing an expansion of this initiative and other sustainability initiatives.

Personal Life

Adams has been distracted during his first year as mayor by personal matters such as divorce and grieving the loss of his father, both which were difficult to bear. While continuing with an aggressive approach against crime, Adams is also keen on improving quality of life for city residents. His administration has undertaken efforts to achieve this end by dismantling outdoor dining sheds, increasing trash basket service and reinstating street sweeping after his predecessor cut back during the pandemic. He wants to explore hyperlocalized garbage pickup, where contractors would collect trash twice each week in certain neighborhoods. Although initially opposed by building service workers union, POLITICO sources say the union has since come around on this idea.
