Early Life and Education

Early life experiences and environments are profoundly influential on a child’s social, emotional, and physical development. Positive experiences can set children on more successful pathways while negative ones can have lasting ramifications on their development.

As such, UNESCO recognizes high-quality early childhood education as an integral component of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – specifically providing all children up until eight years old access to preprimary education of excellent quality.

Studies show that children who participate in early childhood education programs are more likely to succeed academically, have better health, and lower crime and dependency rates than those without. This may be partly because early years brain development occurs quickly and provides a solid foundation for academic achievement.
