Andrew Berlin is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Berlin Packaging, a global manufacturer of containers. The company, which he led for 32 years, became the largest manufacturer of plastic packaging in the world.  

Early life 

Andrew T.  Berlin was born on June 30, 1960, in Chicago, Illinois. 

Andrew Berlin is the son of businessman and investor William Berlin. Before he started his own company, Andrew worked as an attorney with Katten, Muchin, and Zavis. After a few years, he opted to follow his father’s advice and move to another city to pursue a higher degree. At the time, Berlin’s parents were not wealthy. However, his parents made sure that their son had all the tools he needed to succeed in life.


Berlin studied military history at Boston College and later studied business administration at Stanford. 

He graduated from Lake Forest Academy and attended New Trier High School. After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University, Berlin went on to earn a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1986.


For nearly 32 years, Andrew Berlin, the former Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Chicago-based Berlin Packaging, guided the business from a small distributor into the largest of its kind in the packaging industry, with offices and plants on four continents. 

The global supplier of metal, plastic, and glass containers and closures to dozens of industries. Berlin is a partner owner of the Chicago Cubs in baseball. Additionally, he is Chairman and Owner of the South Bend Cubs, a Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate. Berlin practiced law at Katten, Muchin, and Zavis before becoming involved in the business. 

Berlin is also involved in business, the community, and public safety. He is a Commissioner of the Public Safety Commission in Glencoe, Illinois, a member of the Illinois State Police Merit Board, and he funds the Institute of National Security and Counterterrorism at Syracuse University, where he also serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees. He is also appointed to the Illinois State Police Merit Board. He is also a fan of baseball. 

He was one of the owners of the Chicago White Sox and has been involved in ownership for quite some time. Since buying a share of the White Sox, he has seen his team’s attendance grow to new heights each season.

He was also an avid reader and a savvy writer.

In 2015, the South Bend Cubs were named Team of the Year by Ballpark Digest. New attendance records have been established each season under Berlin’s management.

Berlin was inducted into the National Association of Container Distributors Hall of Fame in 2015 for his significant accomplishments in the packaging industry and at Berlin Packaging.
