Ben Haynes
Ben is an exceptional litigator specializing in appellate work. He has won multiple cases at the Texas Supreme Court over recent legislative pension reforms that would alter billions in benefits (2019-2022).
He has extensive experience representing lead arrangers and agent banks in syndicated and club deals involving senior lending transactions, in addition to private and sponsor portfolio companies in leveraged buyouts and recapitalization transactions.
Early Life and Education

Euphemia Lofton Haynes distinguished herself in academia, holding multiple positions including math teacher and chair of department at Armstrong High School in Washington D.C. Additionally, she taught at Miner Teachers College and District of Columbia Teachers College before being active within Catholicism.
She eventually went on to work in television news reporting and weather forecasting at WXYZ-TV in Detroit and KYW-TV in Philadelphia, covering stories including Martin Luther King Jr and Lyndon Johnson as well as hosting local public affairs programs like Sunny Side Up and Sunday Magazine.
Professional Career
Haynes employs no-till farming practices in his fields to protect soil from wind and rain erosion that has devastated much of Alabama’s farmland. Additionally, he plants cover crops between planting and harvesting cycles of his main crop to save nutrients-rich land from being lost through erosion by wind or rain.
Haynes spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach on Mark Turgeon’s staff at Marquette, helping lead them to a program-record 29 wins and national ranking while contributing in developing all-league performers Justin Lewis, Darryl Morsell and Kam Jones.
Haynes also worked as an assistant coach under head coach Tod Kowalczyk at Toledo before spending four seasons at Kent State as an assistant coach. Haynes currently resides in Gwinnett County, Georgia with wife Tierra and their three children DeAndre Jr., Devon and Dallas.
Achievement and Honors
Haynes is a member of the Order of the Coif, one of law school’s most prestigious honor societies. Additionally, he volunteers weekly at Youth Court – an initiative intended to teach children about legal matters while also decreasing school-to-prison pipeline issues.
Haynes specializes in religion and literature, with particular attention paid to Jewish-Christian relations and biblical justifications for slavery and segregation. He has published articles in journals and books as well as speaking at national and international conferences.
Haynes Scholar recipients will be awarded with a $1,000 honorarium and invited to present their innovation before our Department and Vanderbilt community. In addition, honorable mention applicants are also invited to this celebration dinner.
Personal Life
Benjamin Luke Haynes is an attorney specializing in foreclosure cases. He has represented various banks during their foreclosure cases and has extensive knowledge of how the process works. Benjamin earned his undergraduate degree at Oral Roberts University while playing varsity basketball – then after graduation attended law school at Florida Coastal School of Law.
Eric is also an avid sports fan and enjoys playing basketball, golfing and watching professional baseball – especially the Atlanta Braves and Derek Jeter’s New York Yankees!
He is married to Rebecca Clare Haynes and they share one daughter named Maggie Doreen Haynes. They currently reside in Federalsburg, Maryland where they attend First Baptist Church of Federalsburg and recently celebrated unveiling a street sign in honor of Haynes’ grandfather with skits, music and a presentation from Haynes’ grandson.
