One of the best ways to celebrate the Chinese New Year is to watch a Lion Dance. The troupe from the Giac Quang Buddhist Temple has been practicing for about three months. The troupe members are responsible for moving the head and tail of the lion while a music group sets the beat. To do this perfectly, the dancers must be highly coordinated.
There are several events in and around Oklahoma City to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The Confucius Institute at OU will sponsor a lion dance on Jan. 25. Children will also be given traditional red envelopes as good luck. The red envelopes signify good luck and a prosperous year.
If you’re in Oklahoma City on Lunar New Year, you’ll want to visit the Super Cao Nguyen market on NW 23. You can see fireworks and watch a live lion dance. There are many special dishes from different ethnic backgrounds that you can find at the market. A free online storytime is also available at the market, complete with interactive songs or rhymes.
A mini-procession will also be held during the Chinese New Year celebration. The parade starts from the historic St. Mary’s Square and travels through downtown Oklahoma City on Grant Ave. The parade includes lion dancers, giant walking puppets, costumed stilt walkers, drummers, and dancers.
Opening Night 2022 is the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in OKC, sponsored by Midfirst Bank, Insmuch Foundation, and Gardner Tanenbaum. It is a family-friendly celebration and a favorite of locals. The event features live music and a spectacular light show, and wristbands are only $8 for advance purchase.
