Cleveland Browns 2001 NFL Draft

The 2001 NFL Draft is less than a week away, and we can look back at a disappointing draft class for the Cleveland Browns. Butch Davis, the new head coach, failed to select a quality player. The draft class had more arrests collectively than the Pro Bowl players. So what went wrong? I’ll go over the draft’s key moments, as well as some key players.

The Browns drafted Quincy Morgan in the second round. He went on to record 17 touchdown receptions during his four seasons with them. In his rookie year, Henry struggled in man coverage but showed great promise as a nickel back, where he was best suited to ball hawk. To make room for Jon Kitna, Henry was traded to Detroit the following year. The Browns then signed Rudy Johnson, Edgerton Hartwell, and Roberto Garza, who all ended up with the same career totals.

The 2001 season ended with seven wins, and the team finished third in the NFL’s Central Division. The Browns allowed 319 points, and finished with a record of 7-7. Tim Couch threw for 3,040 yard and seven touchdowns. Kevin Johnson threw 84 passes for 1,097 yards, and James Jackson ran 554 yards. Jamel White added a significant amount to the rushing attack. The ball-hawking defense also played well, leading to 42 turnovers and averaging a sack per game.

The Browns were down 15-10 at the end of the fourth quarter. They were driving into Jacksonville territory and had just completed a pass to Quincy Morgan. With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, they hurried to the 8-yard line and spiked the ball to stop the clock. The Browns lost the game 12-12. The Steelers kicked six field goals, and a late touchdown helped the Steelers take home the victory.
