Darious Williams Signs a Three-Year Contract With the Jaguars

Darious Williams, a free agent out of UAB, has signed a three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The $30 million contract includes $18 million guaranteed and a maximum of $39 million in incentives. Williams, a Jacksonville native, spent the last three seasons with the Rams, where he earned $4.8 million in guaranteed salary last season. He also earned $2.2 million in each of the previous two seasons.

In the NFL, Von Miller, who is the league’s leader in sacks, is expected to remain third among outside linebackers in terms of total contract value. The Rams will pay Aaron Donald to keep him as a defensive tackle. However, a five-year contract for Miller will cost the Rams around $51.4 million. A player with a track record of success in the NFL will likely command a high salary.

The Jaguars reworked their offense and defense to improve their overall play, addressing the needs of their offensive line, linebackers, tight ends, and defensive linemen. Adding Williams and Foye Oluokun to their roster could give the Jaguars a more consistent defense in the future. While Williams’ deal isn’t likely to be a long-term solution, the Jaguars did address their need for cornerbacks and added Darious Williams to their roster on Wednesday.

Gladney was released from a Dallas felony charge in February 2021. The Minnesota Vikings released him while his legal issues were worked out. Gladney was not drafted in the remaining 2021 because of his legal issues. As a result, the Cardinals signed backup tight end Maxx Williams to a one-year contract. In his five starts for the Cardinals in 2021, Williams caught 16 passes for 193 yards, but was forced to miss a game in Week five due to a horrific knee injury.

The Rams also placed original round tenders on Travin Howard, linebacker, and kicker Matt Gay. The latter was a seventh-round pick in the 2018 draft. The Rams would receive a seventh-round pick as compensation. These two free agents were among the Rams’ top picks in this offseason. If the Rams want to sign Darious Williams, they need to consider the long-term implications of the move.

In addition to signing Darious Williams to a multi-year deal, the Rams also drafted four-star safety Jacob Harris as a backup on offense. Although he is a “project” player, the fourth-round pick will eventually be on the team. Until then, he will need to contribute offensively in order to cement his place on the roster. Williams is not the only draft pick that could be a valuable asset to the Rams’ defense.
