Dave Borbely – Offense Line Coach at Virginia

Dave Borbely is an offensive line coach with 35 years of coaching experience. He was previously an assistant at Maryland, Notre Dame, Stanford, Louisville and Virginia.

He has coached 17 All-ACC lineman and one three-time All-ACC performer. Currently, he serves as a special assistant to head coach Pat Narduzzi.

Early Life and Education

Borbely, a Hammond, Indiana native, earned his bachelor of arts in history from DePauw University in 1981 and followed that with a master of arts in secondary education from the University of Evansville. Over three decades since, he has built an impressive coaching resume – including four seasons as offensive line coach at Louisville under Charlie Strong.

Borbely’s tenure at Maryland saw his team win two bowl games, play in numerous venues, and cultivate an impressive roster of underclassmen with dreams to play in the NFL. Professional Career

Borbely has extensive experience coaching offensive linemen across 14 schools for 40 seasons, culminating with his most recent stint at Maryland (2013-14). Additionally, he has served as head coach to 11 different head coaches during this time.

He began his collegiate career as a graduate assistant at Evansville (1981-82) before receiving his first major-college coaching opportunity under Phillip Fulmer at Tennessee. Additionally, he has served as a graduate assistant at Tulane, Temple and Rice.

Over his four-year tenure at Colorado (2002-05), he led the Buffs to three Big 12 Northern Division titles and three bowl appearances. Additionally, he assisted in developing All-Big 12 center Mark Fenton into a finalist for the Dave Riminigton Award presented to America’s top center.

He has served as head coach at Virginia twice (2006-09 and 2015). At UVA, he tutored senior offensive tackle Eugene Monroe to several 2008 All-American squads and earned himself the Jacobs Blocking Trophy – awarded annually to ACC’s top blocker.
