David Cox was an accomplished British landscape painter who primarily worked in watercolor, but later transitioned to oil painting. Born near Birmingham at Detitend, England in 1805, he displayed his works regularly at the Royal Academy from 1805 onwards.

He was renowned as a drawing master, teaching pupils from several aristocratic families.

His artwork was greatly influenced by Charles Barber and John Varley. He visited Wales frequently with Barber, creating some of his earliest watercolours during this period.

At 15 years old, he started as a frame maker and spent the rest of his working career honing all aspects of this craft. From drilling holes in temples for NHS frames to toric bowing, inserting joints and finishing frames, he gained valuable experience along the way.
