He graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1948 and then went on to Dartmouth College, majoring in sociology.

His early career included radio broadcasting as a play-by-play announcer and news reporter at CBS Radio, followed by joining CBS Evening News as an analyst.

He then went on to teach the first course in broadcast journalism for 15 years at the University of Missouri, serving as chairman of its department of broadcast journalism. Additionally, he managed a CBS owned radio station in St. Louis for several years until retiring from radio in 1989.
