Dave McKie

David McKie is a renowned British author, historian and journalist. He served as deputy editor, chief leader writer and columnist for The Guardian from 1993 until 1999.

He is also an access-to-information and data journalism consultant, having conducted workshops for the Canadian Association of Journalists, National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, and TV Ontario.

Early Life and Education

Dave Mckie ’80, a former political reporter, deputy editor, chief leader writer and columnist (‘Elsewhere’ and ‘Smallweed’ for The Guardian, was raised in London and Leeds. After studying history at Oxford, he began his journalism career with the Oxford Mail newspaper.

He is the author of numerous books, such as Jabez: the Rise and Fall of a Victorian Rogue; Great British Bus Journeys; and McKie’s Gazetteer.

David was born in Melbourne on May 14th 1909 and ordained deacon and priest in 1932. He served as Assistant Chaplain to Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and Trinity College Melbourne; additionally, he served as Vicar at Christ Church South Yarra in Australia until his passing away March 30th 1994 at Mornington, Melbourne.

McKie has distinguished himself at Wake Forest over the last four years as a true student-athlete. A product of the campus community and member of the Class of 2020, McKie is on track to graduate with a degree in Communication.

McKie has been a beacon of hope in an age where players are frequently switching schools or pro before finishing four years of college. His positive influence on both the basketball program and community attests to his character, serving as an inspiring example of what it means to be a real student-athlete who will graduate this May with a degree from one of the top 25 universities.

Achievement and Honors

McKie was an inspiring force on Wake’s first six wins of the season, even though his team was struggling through ACC play at the start. He started every game and ended the year averaging 13.5 points per game with 7 rebounds per contest.

He notched 24 double-digit performances and finished the season with the sixth most points ever scored by a Wake freshman.

Dave McNkie was not only an amazing basketball player, but a stellar student as well. He served as class president, served on committees for both his business fraternity and social sorority, and earned many honors throughout his time at Wake Forest.

David McKie is an award-winning journalist and currently the deputy managing editor at The National Observer in Ottawa. He has authored many books, such as Jabez: The Rise and Fall of a Victorian Rogue (shortlisted for the Whitbread Biography Award) and Great British Bus Journeys.

He was raised in London and Leeds, studied history at Oxford, and soon after started working as a reporter for the Oxford Mail. Since then he has written articles on topics ranging from Victorian politician Jabez Balfour to London gangster John Bull.

He is a passionate supporter of youth sports, community causes and his alma mater Le Moyne College. He has four sons: Lucas (12), Cayden (9), Tyler (6) and Jackson (2) – whom he married to Ashley Mckie).
