Dave Tressel – A Berea Teacher and Board Member

Dave Tressel was a beloved and influential figure in the Berea community, having an immense effect on both Berea City School District and Baldwin Wallace University.

Early Life and Education

Tressel was raised in the northeast Ohio city of Berea, where he earned his degrees from Berea High School and Baldwin Wallace College. Additionally, he served as a board member and teacher for the Berea city school district.

Dave began his coaching career after his playing days were cut short due to a knee injury. He has coached at four different levels, from high school through college and even the professional level with the Cleveland Browns and Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

He had a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact in his community, which ultimately led him to become president of Youngstown State University.

Professional Career

Tressel’s professional career was primarily in coaching, starting with his position as a high school coach in Berea. He remained actively engaged in the Berea community by serving on the Berea School Board and joining numerous local organizations.

He served on the Baldwin Wallace Swimming and Diving team for 35 years, serving as their head coach. Additionally, he was a member of the Berea Kiwanis Club, Berea Historical Society, and Coe Lake Nature Trail Committee.

He was a highly successful and esteemed coach who guided the Ohio State Buckeyes to two national championships and one bowl game. Unfortunately, his tenure at Ohio State ended due to multiple NCAA violations.

Achievements and Honors

As Ohio State’s head football coach, Tressel guided his squad to three National Championship games and eight BCS post-season bowl matches. He is renowned for his support of charities and devotion to Ohio high school football development programs.

As president of Youngstown State University, he has spearheaded the construction of three campus student health centers and two privately-funded student apartment complexes. Additionally, full-time equivalent enrollment has increased substantially, freshman class standardized test scores and grade point averages are among the highest ever recorded at the university, and Honors College enrollments have more than tripled under his leadership.

He is actively involved in several organizations in Berea, such as the Berea Historical Society, Berea Kiwanis and Grace Church. Furthermore, he serves on the mentoring board for African-American Berea High students through Realizing Your Potential mentoring program and works closely with the Berea Swimming Club.
