David Holway is a labor union administrator and the current president of NAGE, Massachusetts’ largest state employee union.

Holway not only works at NAGE but he’s also the president of Massachusetts Thoroughbred Breeders Association, an organization created to promote thoroughbred breeding in the state that receives funding from Suffolk Downs.

Early Life and Education

David Holway was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and attended Rindge Technical High School before graduating from Boston State College. Following college he went on to work as a deputy commissioner at the Massachusetts State Department of Corrections before being named Chief Financial Officer at Norfolk County Hospital.

In 2002, he was elected president of NAGE–the National Association Government Employees–and served as national president for the International Brotherhood of Police Officers.

He not only runs NAGE but he also oversees the Massachusetts Thoroughbred Breeders Association. According to state auditor’s records, their group receives a small percentage of revenue generated by races at Suffolk Downs.

Professional Career

David Holway is a well-known national figure in the state-employee union world. As president of NAGE, he has held many other executive positions previously as well.

He has achieved great success throughout his career and earned himself a number of honors and awards. Additionally, he is widely regarded as an expert on market research.

He is the author of numerous books and articles in his field of expertise, as well as being involved in political campaigns. Currently, he serves as president of both the National Association of Government Employees and International Brotherhoods of Police Officers/Correctional Officers/Police Federation International.

David Holway is a highly accomplished and award-winning professor of entomology at UC San Diego. His recent research has focused on biological invasions and plant-pollinator interactions. Additionally, he has spearheaded efforts to protect California’s most precious natural resources through the establishment and administration of the UC Natural Reserve System.

Holway is an esteemed academic and innovator. His achievements include founding the UC San Diego ‘Hall of Science’, an innovation and leadership program that has won multiple awards for its impact on student learning. Furthermore, he wrote the book ‘The Biggest Bugs’ and serves on multiple committees at UC San Diego.

Personal Life

Holway leads an extraordinary double life: He’s the president of Quincy-based NAGE, a state workers union; and he runs his own horse breeders association. That kind of work pays well and has made him into something of a role model for working men around the country.

In 2003, Holway earned more than $112,000 from the breeders group through a small levy on Suffolk Downs races, according to an audit from the state auditor’s office. That amounts to more than $200,000 annually.

He works as a family therapist and counselor by night, while currently training to be an advocate for CASA Orange County, which offers powerful advocacy and meaningful connections for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. As he puts it, this job gives him great satisfaction and satisfaction.
