David Shrider, Professor of Finance at Miami University, Passes Away

Miami University community members are deeply saddened to learn of Professor David Shrider’s death last week while backpacking in Alaska.

Shrider was widely recognized for being an outstanding educator, colleague and friend who had an enormous effect on students worldwide.

At Miami University’s Farmer School of Business, he served as Director of Global Business Programs. His broad knowledge drew many students to attend his courses.

Early Life and Education

Shrider earned his Bachelor’s in Business from Miami University in 1992 before going on to receive both his Master’s and Doctorate in Finance from University of South Carolina.

He served on the faculty of Miami’s Farmer School of Business from 2004 to 2017, as reported in a Facebook post from the school. Furthermore, he served as director of global business programs there.

Students described him as an engaging and creative teacher who created a learning experience, not simply lectures. Students report that Chris Bogard, the Vice President for External Relations and Development of MU Business School lauded their dedication in helping their classmates grasp complex concepts.

Professional Career

Shrider delighted students and faculty alike with his high-energy classroom discussions that left them buzzing with energy. At Miami, he taught an array of undergraduate and graduate level courses; during his PhD studies at University of South Carolina he pursued award-winning research on corporate finance and investments which is widely regarded as among the best and most innovative in its field. Shrider was married to Beth (Miami ’93) and they shared two sons. An avid supporter of Miami athletics as a season ticket holder and Red & White Club member as well as receiving Don Loss Volunteer of Year award in 2016.

He was a proud Texan and avid sports fan who appreciated a good drink. For his contributions to Miami University, his combination of hard work and generosity earned him induction into its Hall of Fame.

Darroch described him as an irreplaceable member of the Farmer School community, serving as director of global business programs and leading study abroad trips around the globe. Students gravitated to his classes due to his broad spectrum of knowledge; their compassion made him “an invaluable addition to Farmer School”, according to Darroch.

David began his football career at Petrolia High School (1A Petrolia). There he began as a wide receiver. By senior year he had become team captain while collecting 91 passes for 1,641 receiving yards and was named team captain himself.

He won several college football awards at Florida before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Professionally, he played for Buffalo Bills (2010-2012), Cleveland Browns (2013) and New York Jets (2013-2014).
