David Shrider, Professor of Finance at Miami University, Passes Away

Miami University community members are deeply saddened to learn of Professor David Shrider’s death last week while backpacking in Alaska.

Shrider was widely recognized for being an outstanding educator, colleague and friend who had an enormous effect on students worldwide.

At Miami University’s Farmer School of Business, he served as Director of Global Business Programs. His broad knowledge drew many students to attend his courses.

Early Life and Education

Shrider earned his Bachelor’s in Business from Miami University in 1992 before going on to receive both his Master’s and Doctorate in Finance from University of South Carolina.

He served on the faculty of Miami’s Farmer School of Business from 2004 to 2017, as reported in a Facebook post from the school. Furthermore, he served as director of global business programs there.

Students described him as an engaging and creative teacher who created a learning experience, not simply lectures. Students report that Chris Bogard, the Vice President for External Relations and Development of MU Business School lauded their dedication in helping their classmates grasp complex concepts.

Professional Career

Shrider delighted students and faculty alike with his high-energy classroom discussions that left them buzzing with energy. At Miami, he taught an array of undergraduate and graduate level courses; during his PhD studies at University of South Carolina he pursued award-winning research on corporate finance and investments which is widely regarded as among the best and most innovative in its field. Shrider was married to Beth (Miami ’93) and they shared two sons. An avid supporter of Miami athletics as a season ticket holder and Red & White Club member as well as receiving Don Loss Volunteer of Year award in 2016.

He was a proud Texan and avid sports fan who appreciated a good drink. For his contributions to Miami University, his combination of hard work and generosity earned him induction into its Hall of Fame.

As a professor at Miami University’s Farmer School of Business, David Shrider was known for his dynamic and innovative teaching style. Furthermore, he was renowned for being a dedicated family man, mentor, and friend.

His students described him as someone who cared deeply for their success; for instance, he gave them access to his home phone number so they could contact him anytime they needed.

He also assisted a student in Milan who needed an orthodontist after she broke her retainer.

He also led study abroad trips around the globe.

Shrider was an esteemed member of both Miami University’s Farmer School of Business and Miami as a whole, according to a Facebook post about his death from this school. He championed for thousands of Miami University students he impacted directly while supporting Miami Athletics as an avid supporter and tireless volunteer.

David Shrider was an esteemed professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and news of his death elicited both sorrow and appreciation from students on Facebook.

Since 2004, Shrider had been teaching at the Farmer Business School as part of its faculty. Farmer Business School Dean Jennifer Darroch describes him as being “the epitome of great professor,” dedicating himself to ensure each of his students grasp concepts that might otherwise elude them during lectures.

Darroch described him as an irreplaceable member of the Farmer School community, serving as director of global business programs and leading study abroad trips around the globe. Students gravitated to his classes due to his broad spectrum of knowledge; their compassion made him “an invaluable addition to Farmer School”, according to Darroch.

David began his football career at Petrolia High School (1A Petrolia). There he began as a wide receiver. By senior year he had become team captain while collecting 91 passes for 1,641 receiving yards and was named team captain himself.

He won several college football awards at Florida before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Professionally, he played for Buffalo Bills (2010-2012), Cleveland Browns (2013) and New York Jets (2013-2014). His estimated net worth as of 2017 is around $2 Million; furthermore he is also active as a philanthropist, helping orphaned children in Haiti.
