David Willoughby is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Los Angeles. He provides therapy to individuals and couples struggling with mood disorders, addiction recovery, psychological responses to medical illness, as well as relationships.

He has an impressive background in the music industry, having authored eight editions of the college textbook “The World of Music,” which provides a global perspective on musical genres from different cultures. Additionally, he has produced radio programs.

Early Life and Education

Sometimes the names of towns, cities, counties and states can evoke historical curiosity. They may be inspired by people, places, historic events or even Native American influences.

Willoughby, Ohio is no exception to this rule. In 1834 the town was renamed Willoughby in honor of Dr. Westel Willoughby Jr. – president and professor at Fairfield Medical College in Herkimer County, New York.

Some years later, two physicians practicing in Chagrin, Ohio, embarked on a mission to open a medical school here. Their goal was to lure Dr. Willoughby back to Ohio and lead the new institute that would be named in his honor.

Professional Career

David Willoughby has been an engineer in the pipeline industry for four decades. His expertise encompasses design, permitting, construction and testing of gas transmission/distribution pipelines, petroleum pipelines and water/sewer pipelines.

He has extensive expertise in the design, evaluation and management of cathodic protection (CP) systems. As a NACE certified cathodic protection specialist, he also offers HDD training to the pipeline industry.

He has also taught music appreciation and double bass at Elizabethtown College, Eastern New Mexico University and Susquehanna University. Additionally, he hosted several hour-long weekly music programs on public radio stations.

Achievements and Honors

Dave Willoughby was an accomplished musician, earning himself several honors in the process. As a double bassist for numerous symphonies around America, he also performed in various ensembles and jazz combos.

He holds a PhD in music education and has taught at Eastern New Mexico University and Elizabethtown College. Additionally, he was the author of The World of Music – an introduction to music appreciation textbook.

He served as coordinator of the turfgrass management program at Ohio State ATI and his students have gone on to have successful careers in this industry. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was awarded with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation and remains an active mentor even after retirement.

Personal Life

David Willoughby’s personal life revolved around family, friends and travel. He enjoyed camping, golfing, tennis and racquetball as well as exploring America with his partner.

He had a deep-seated love of music, which led him to study with various teachers and perform in symphony orchestras in Roswell, NM, and Hershey, PA.

In 1993, he retired from teaching music at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM and returned to Central Pennsylvania with his wife Barbara English Maris (CMS President in 1981 and 1982). They now reside in Elizabethtown, PA with their three sons.

On January 6, 1984, Joyce Willoughby left a note with the Kennebec Journal claiming she had information regarding Paula Roberts’ disappearance. The following morning, Linda Buskin visited Willoughby’s home to verify her account.
