Essential Rules for Matching Men’s Accessories

Men’s Accessories

Women think that men have it so easy. Any time an event comes up, it’s widely believed that men can wear the same suit over and over again, so long as they change their tie. In actuality, this is far from the truth, and drawing together a man’s ensemble is an incredibly intricate process. There’s a lot of matching to be done when a man is striving to tie an outfit together, otherwise leathers and metals run the risk of looking misplaced. As a result, there are a handful of essential rules that men must follow when it comes to correctly accessorizing. Read on to discover the essential rules of matching men’s accessories.

Match Leathers

Some may think this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised by the number of men who will shamelessly pair a brown belt with black shoes. Despite this, All the way from your wallet to your designer leather bracelet, your leathers need to match. This isn’t to say that you have to search far and wide for leather accessories that are exactly the same color. As long as your accessories sit within the same color family, this is enough to ensure that your overall ensemble is streamlined. Quite simply, your bag, wallet, watch strap, bracelets, and shoes all need to be of a similar shade in order to achieve an effortless finish.

Match Metals

As with leather, your metals should also match one another. Nothing looks ore disjointed than a confused mixture of silver and gold, so choose your tone and stick with it. Much like with leather, the metals don’t have to be of an identical tone, but rather just from the same color family. In short, your watch, cufflinks, tie clips/tie bars, rings, necklaces, bracelets, suspenders, and earrings should all share a similar tone. If you’re of a fairer complexion, silver tends to work with this skin tone better, as gold will likely wash you out. Therefore, choosing which metal to opt for will often be heavily influenced by your complexion.

Remember Texture

Texture is often something that goes forgotten by men and women alike; however, it’s actually very important and plays a crucial role in creating clothing ensembles. For instance, a man may place a knitted tie atop a smooth cotton shirt, yet this same tie couldn’t be worn with a textured shirt. Mixing too much texture is always very risky, meaning that it’s a good idea to stick with one textured item as a statement piece, rather than layering textures. For example, a wool tie calls for a silk pocket square, whereas a smooth tie constitutes a rougher cotton pocket square.

Don’t Fear Patterns

So many men are afraid of getting patterns wrong that they avoid them all together, which isn’t the way forward for a man wanting to make a fashion statement. Instead of fearing patterns, you should merely look to employ them in the best way. For instance, a patterned suit may seem out there; however, when every other element is a solid color, this can really work. Similarly, a solid-colored suit and shirt screams for some patterns, which can present themselves in the form of ties and pocket squares. With this being said, if both the tie and pocket square are patterned, they must match.

Carefully Select Colors

In order to avoid clashing, men tend to stick with monochrome shades but, once again, this isn’t the way to go for the fashion forward man. You can be adventurous with your color schemes, so long as you consult the color wheel and choose complementary over clashing colors.
