George Barney, 87, of Merrillville, passed away

on May 10th

On May 10th, George Barney, 87 of Merrillville passed away peacefully. Surviving are his children Betty (late Alan) Burns, Peggy Marshall and Burnes (Julie) Barney; grandchildren Ginger Susan Laura Charles Aislinn Stuart Emily and Katie; as well as ten great-grandchildren.

After leaving England, Barney assumed command of the Royal Engineers in New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land. Additionally, he served as superintendent of Port Curtis convict colony near Gladstone in Queensland.

Early Life and Education

Barney began his professional life as a teacher in the public schools of Weir, Cherokee county. This experience served him well for his later duties in the military; at twenty-one he was promoted to lieutenant.

After serving five years in the Army, Barney returned to Australia and took charge of Port Curtis colony in north-eastern Queensland. Unfortunately, this venture proved too short-lived and Barney was forced back to Sydney.

Barney wrote numerous books and published hundreds of scientific papers throughout his life. He also championed conservative approaches to surgery, particularly breast cancer treatment. As a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in England, Barney received many honors throughout his career; his family and friends fondly remember him fondly.

Professional Career

Barney was an impressive high school star at Creighton Prep in Omaha, earning All-Big Eight honors on the basketball court. Additionally, he played baseball for the same school and led both teams to state championships in both sports.

In 1946, despite being selected in the first round by the Dodgers, Barney struggled with his wildness. Manager Leo Durocher became frustrated with his inability to control it and suspended him for “conduct detrimental to baseball.”

Barney returned to the Dodgers in 1947 and managed to improve upon his poor record. Nonetheless, his wildness continued to plague him; thus, he was sent to Fort Worth of the Texas League in 1951.

Achievements and Honors

George Barney is a highly esteemed scholar in strategic management. He has authored six books and presented research papers at over seventy universities around the world. Additionally, he serves as visiting scholar at Oxford University’s Said School of Business, guest professor at INSEAD France, and guest professor at Copenhagen Business School Denmark.

He is a member of the Academy of Management and Strategic Management Society, having earned several awards for his research. In addition to teaching strategy classes to MBA and Ph.D. students at the University of Utah, he provides executive education programs around the world. Furthermore, he serves on the Board of Advisors to Indiana University Northwest’s Chancellor as well as belonging to University Club, Crown Point United Methodist Church and World Presidents’ Organization Chicago Chapter organizations.

Personal Life

George Barney was a soldier and engineer who saw action during the Peninsular War and in the West Indies. At age 16, he joined the Royal Engineers and soon after was promoted to second lieutenant. In 1808 he earned his commission.

He served in the army as both an officer and engineer, eventually rising to Captain in 1825. Additionally, he held several public offices throughout Sydney’s history.

He was married three times, most notably to Juliet A.M. He also had two children before passing away in Sydney on April 16, 1862.
