George Chilmonik is One of the Most Influential People in Geoffrey Huang’s Life

Geoffrey Huang, a Phillipsburg High School senior, credits his teacher George Chilmonik as one of the most influential people in his life. However, this week the longtime math teacher was arrested on charges of blackmailing an official from the school district to influence a tenure vote, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, Chilmonik pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge. He and wrestling coach Dave Post, also a teacher at the school, could now face lengthy jail terms.

Early Life and Education

Chilmonik earned his degree in education from the University of Scranton while playing two years for Hunterdon Central as a starting quarterback and All-American wrestler. After graduation, he taught for over two decades in New Jersey before being appointed as special assistant to the State Board of Education two years ago. Additionally, he is an active member in his community.

Professional Career

George Chilmonik has been a math teacher at Phillipsburg High School in Lopatcong Township, New Jersey for more than three decades. He has earned four honors from the Star-Ledger Scholars program and his students say he is their most inspiring educator. Geoffrey Huang credits Chilmonik with instilling him with “tenacity” and credits his persistence as being instrumental to his acceptance to Duke University where he plans to major in computer science.

On Wednesday, Chilmonik pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit official misconduct. He had been accused of joining forces with others to threaten another Phillipsburg School District employee with embarrassing information unless they took action consistent with his and other teachers’ demands in order to influence a tenure vote. As part of his plea and extensive cooperation in this investigation, he will be entering into a pre-trial intervention program and placed on probation.

Achievements and Honors

George Chilmonik is an accomplished teacher who has earned numerous awards and honors during his career. In addition to his academic accomplishments, he has also been recognized for his community service work.

He has earned a host of national and regional educational accolades, such as the National Merit Scholarship Commended Student Award, Albright College National Honor Society Award, and NCC Foundation Scholarship.

He was selected for the Express-Times Academic All Star and received several honors, such as the Ray Salabsky Award from his school, National Honor Society President’s Education Award and Patriot Band and Orchestra Musician Award.

Personal Life

George Chilmonik is a major factor in Phillipsburg High School’s successful wrestling program. He has an eye for talent, and together with his wife Jennifer they strive to help students realize their aspirations.

He appreciates the finer things in life, from his collection of baseball memorabilia to his passion for vintage cars and bicycles. His favorite pastime is taking rides while listening to music. He and his wife reside in Bethlehem, Pa with two kids; they also have a dog named Maxwell and cat named Charlie. Most importantly, however, is that they’re all happy and healthy together as a family.
