George Easterling is a member of the family that operates one of America’s largest cockfighting operations, and was recently found guilty in federal court for his participation in this illegal activity.

He is currently serving a 22-month prison sentence for felony animal fighting and has also been ordered to pay a fine.

Early Life and Education

George Easterling was born in Hamlet, Arkansas and grew up surrounded by nature and education. As a boy he enjoyed exploring his surroundings and becoming well-read.

His parents encouraged him to explore a wide variety of subjects, and he developed an affinity for poetry and literature. Additionally, he enjoyed sports and trying different foods.

George was an inquisitive mind, continuing his education at Ole Miss and UNC Chapel Hill. He graduated with honors and was published as a poet.

His career included teaching at various schools around the country and serving as church pastor in multiple United Methodist congregations. Survived by his wife Shirley – herself an author – he will be deeply missed by family and friends for his kind heart and compassion for humanity.

Professional Career

George Easterling was a minor leaguer who made waves during his brief appearance in the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers. He had an excellent hitting stroke and earned himself a following due to his cheerful demeanor.

He joined the Tigers as a backup to Harry Heilmann in right field, and also hit in both left and center fields.

On April 17th, 1928 in a game against the Indians at Navin Field, Easterling hit his first home run and then went 3-for-4 against the Browns the following night.

Unfortunately, the barrel-chested slugger never quite replicated that power level again throughout his career. He only made five more years in the minor leagues before finally retiring after five seasons.

George Easterling was an inspiring individual who made a lasting impact on his community and beyond. For his efforts, he received numerous awards and honors.

He was an integral figure in NOAA’s early efforts to comprehend the role of CO2 in climate change, leading efforts to provide timely public access to oceanic and atmospheric data. Furthermore, he coordinated NOAA’s Ocean Atmosphere Carbon Exchange Study, or OACES.

His leadership abilities were demonstrated through his development of the nation’s first comprehensive underwater sound sensing network, covering all US coastal regions and several marine national parks. Furthermore, he spearheaded interdisciplinary research in deep sea volcanism.

Personal Life

George Easterling is a retired farmer and father to three children: Addison Rae, Enzo and Lucas.

George’s personal life became a hot topic when he was arrested in September 2018 for sexually harassing underage girls at a Norman, Oklahoma restaurant parking lot. In October he pled guilty to the charges and received an eight-year prison sentence.

George was renowned for his love of western movies with John Wayne, his collection of toy tractors and his enthusiasm for flying airplanes. Unfortunately, on April 7, 2021 at the age of 80 he passed away.
