George Embiricos discovered his passion for food during his undergraduate years, which eventually led him to pursue a career as a food writer.

He is currently an associate editor for Food Republic, a New York-based online magazine that explores food culture through stories, interviews and global conversations. His writing ranges from chef profiles to food psychology.

Early Life and Education

George Emiricos was born in 1920 in Athens, Greece to Aristides G. Embiricos and Maria ne Saliaris.

After his father’s passing in 1945, George chose to relocate to New York – then the hub of post-war activity for Greek shipowners.

His objective was to gain independence in shipowning. In November 1946, he purchased the US-flagged, 1920s-built cargo steamer ROBIN ADAIR.

George Embiricos was an accomplished shipowner who built his family shipping business into one of Greece’s leading concerns after World War II. Additionally, he became an avid art collector, amassing an unparalleled collection of paintings and works on paper by masters such as El Greco, Goya, Cezanne, Kandinsky, Picasso, van Gogh and Bacon.

In addition to his flourishing business empire, he is an accomplished Vanderbilt alumnus and passionate family man. Among other accolades, he was named Class of the Class for his academic, extracurricular and sporting accomplishments in 2016 as well as receiving the Steven Mendelson Community Service Award that same year. A proud member of his fraternity, he continues to carry on its legacy as both class agent and philanthropist.

George Embiricos is a licensed master social worker who earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work with an emphasis on Advanced Clinical Practice from Columbia University. He works with individuals and couples to identify their strengths, employing evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing when necessary.

He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University with an undergraduate degree in Child Studies. Currently, he works at Middle School 50 in Brooklyn, NY as both group counselor and individual counselor.

He is also a food writer for Food Republic, an online magazine that explores the culture of food through stories, interviews, global conversations and experiences. His works include chef profiles and restaurant reviews.
