George Griffin is an iconic independent animator renowned for creating films that defy classification. His works often blend animation with live action, flipbooks and trick photography to challenge traditional notions and methods in animation.

In the 1980s, his style evolved yet he continued to draw inspiration from his artistic heritage in films like Flying Fur – featuring an ensemble cast of animal characters set against a thrilling Tom and Jerry soundtrack. Additionally, he produced more narrative works such as It’s an O.K. Life for PBS and Thicket which dealt deeply personal emotions.

George Griffin’s early life was difficult. At seven years old, he began work as a plough boy at Weston Farm; his parents were poor and he was the first member of his family to receive education.

At Ohio State, he was recognized for his humanitarian work both within the community and beyond. He earned both the Big Ten’s Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award and Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award during his time there.

He was also a member of the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni and received the Dean Griffin Community Service Award. Additionally, he served as mentor to several young athletes and on the board of directors for Atlanta Sports Foundation.
