The Legendary George Koi

Koi, the invasive common carp, are wreaking havoc on fishing ponds and reservoirs throughout Southern Region. They often get introduced by families or individuals dumping unwanted pets into nearby waterways or ponds.

In this study, we assessed whether KHV could become latent in koi tissue. To do so, all koi were euthanized via overdose with MS-222 (500 ppm), and tissues including brain, spleen, eye, gills, heart, intestine, kidney and liver were collected at necropsy.

Early Life and Education

George was born into slavery, the son of an enslaved woman named Mary owned by Moses Carver. During the American Civil War, Carver farm was raided and Mary and George were kidnapped and taken to Arkansas where they would be sold as slaves.

He was freed after the Civil War, but his health had deteriorated so badly that Moses Carver had to nurse him back to health. Moses and Susan Carver raised him on their farm where he learned to read and developed an interest in plants and nature.

In his late 20s, he managed to complete high school education while working as a farmhand in Minneapolis, Kansas. Subsequently, he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University.

Professional Career

George Koi had an illustrious career, earning himself the title of best suited for the position of helmsman. A powerhouse when it came to work, but not without humility, Koi was always there for his teammates too. Among many trophies collected throughout his playing days, his most prized possession was his trophy room and occasional whisky breaks. On big lame and tee times he would reflect upon all that life as a professional footballer had brought him; its highs and lows that made up this remarkable man.

Achievements and Honors

George Koi was one of Fiji football’s all-time great players and his legacy lives on. Ronald Chaudhary, former Tavua, Rewa and Nasinu ace, remembered Koi for his calm demeanor under pressure and impressive footwork.

He was an inspiring leader, making the most of his talent to help Fiji become a force in world soccer. The former Rewa and Suva winger was inducted into the Fiji FA’s Legends Club last year.

He was an active supporter of both The Nature Conservancy and Natural Areas Association, adhering to their philosophy that protecting natural areas necessitated long-term commitment for sustainable stewardship.

Personal Life

George Koi’s personal life was marked by his pursuit of passions. He strongly believed in the importance of family and community.

He was also a member of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana, an organization dedicated to advocating for Hawaiian access to resources. He set an inspiring example and epitomized aloha aina (Hawaiian patriotism).

His love of football led him to captained the Fiji national team that defeated Australia 1-0 at Buckhurst Park, Suva in 1977.

He was an inspiringly passionate and committed footballer who supported the growth of the game in Fiji. He served as a great leader during his time, setting an exemplary example for what a footballer should be like.
