Professional Career

Former NFL safety Gerald Sensabaugh has announced his retirement from football. After starting as a starter for the Dallas Cowboys for five seasons, he will now move on to another career.

As a high school student, he excelled in both football and track. As part of the Dobyns-Bennett Indians’ two Class 5A Semifinal teams, he earned himself an All-Big Nine selection at defensive back.

As a junior, he started at strong safety and recorded 78 tackles, 3 sacks, and 6.5 tackles for loss. Additionally, he intercepted one pass and returned a forced fumble.

George Sensabaugh was an esteemed leader in the forensic science field, publishing numerous books and papers in forensic biology and biomedical sciences.

He served on the editorial boards of several forensic journals, such as Journal of Forensic Science, American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, and Forensic Science Reviews. Furthermore, he visited multiple universities as a visiting professor.

Born in Kingsport, Tenn., he began his athletic career at East Tennessee State University where as a junior he recorded 78 tackles and 3 sacks. Later that year he transferred to the University of North Carolina, starting all 11 games as a strong safety while leading his team with 6.5 tackles for loss and intercepting passes against Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern in consecutive games.

Personal Life

George Sensabaugh was an expert on Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, as well as 17th-century poet John Milton’s works.

He began teaching at Stanford University in 1935 and served on the Associates of Stanford University Libraries. Additionally, he served as president of the Milton Society of America.

In addition to his academic pursuits, he enjoyed gardening and was an active member of the Association for Research in the Humanities. In 1944 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship, followed by a Henry E. Huntington Library Fellowship from 1950-51.

After retiring from Stanford, he taught at the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning at the University of San Francisco and served as visiting professor at universities including Texas, California at Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology.
