She was intrigued by this recessive mutation, which caused the pigment pheomelanin to become reddish-yellow instead of black. After she had discovered the gene, she went on to study the genetics of the gold dust dog and its origins.
Three to four weeks is the average age when a Yorkie pup’s first golden hairs appear. The coat will begin to turn full color around nine to twelve months old.
