John Adams was raised in an austere and comfortable environment in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father – an active deacon in the Congregational Church – encouraged his son to study for ministry studies at Harvard Divinity School.

After graduating from Harvard College in 1755, Adams taught grammar school in Worcester while simultaneously pursuing law studies at Boston.

His legal career was also fruitful: He was elected to serve three years in the Massachusetts House and two in the Senate.

Adams served in France and Holland during the Revolutionary War, helping negotiate peace treaties as well as becoming one of the first United States ministers to England.
