John Beckenridge

John Breckinridge was born near Lexington, Kentucky in January 1821. He was the son of a prominent family who had been involved in Kentucky politics.

He studied at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, before studying law for a short time in New Jersey. He then returned to Kentucky and read law under Judge William Owsley in Lexington.

Early Life and Education

Breckinridge’s education began at Centre College, a Presbyterian school in Danville, Kentucky. He later went on to study law at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was admitted to the bar in 1840. His legal career took off in his home state of Kentucky and he became an important member of the Democratic party.

His reputation as a faithful Democrat helped him climb in the state and national political world. In 1860, he was nominated for president but lost to Abraham Lincoln.

In the run-up to the Civil War, Breckinridge served in the Third Kentucky Volunteers and fought against men who would later become Confederate generals. He was a staunch supporter of popular sovereignty, believing that slavery was a local issue, not something to be legislated at the national level.

John Cabell Breckinridge was a lawyer, politician and soldier who served as the 14th Vice President of the United States. He also served as a senator from Kentucky and as a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

His political stance was relatively moderate, though. He took a states’ rights position against interference with slavery, and he supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

He was also a strong advocate for public education and helped to promote it. He also fought for a two-cent property tax for that purpose.

They both went missing in March 2015 and a sighting on Gili Air Island, Indonesia, has given credence to a story that the pair evaded police in New Zealand and fled offshore. Police are now investigating their disappearance as a missing person’s case.
