The United States has a long and varied history of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). It began as an effort to assist mothers in entering the labor force, provide social services for vulnerable children, and promote educational advancement for all young children.

Recently, the focus on early childhood education (ECEC) has grown. This includes an increased emphasis on “school readiness” as a means to promote children’s development and increase their chances for success in school and later life. Furthermore, research has demonstrated that experiences and interactions children have during their first three years affect brain development, creating the basis for successful learning throughout life.
