John Engerman

Composer, songwriter and music director, John Engerman has been writing and arranging songs for theatre and cabaret productions since 1975. He has co-written Ronnie Bwana – Jungle Guide (with Phil Shallat) and The Ballad of Mary Reade, as well as composing the song The Day They Came From Way Out There for The Empty Space.

Early Life and Education

John Engerman was born in Northport, New York. He is an economist and economic historian at the University of Rochester. He is a prolific author and coauthor of several books on economic history.

He is also a respected researcher in the field of American history. He is known for his work on the economics of slavery and abolition.

He has written over 100 articles on his research topics. He has been a member of the editorial boards of several publications and is a co-editor of a three-volume economic history of the United States. He has also collaborated with Robert Fogel on several other book-length studies.

Professional Career

He is the founder of The Strategy Group, a fiscal management consulting firm specializing in government operations. Prior to founding The Strategy Group, John was the Managing Partner of BDO USVI and managed a large team of public accounting and business advisory professionals.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Accounting from Howard University, and is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a past president of the local chapter of the American Institute of CPAs and has served on several committees related to government operations, including the Governor’s Economic Policy Task Force and the Public Management and Budget Working Group.

Among his most notable contributions to the world of economics is the development of an advanced statistical model that was used to predict the stock market’s next move. He also devised an efficient method of conducting a large-scale survey of industrial enterprises. He has been a long-time advocate of free enterprise, arguing that the benefits of capitalism outweigh any perceived social costs.

John Engerman has earned a number of accolades in his career. He has been recognized for his research in economic history and for his teaching.

He is a Professor of Economics and History at the University of Rochester, where he teaches classes in history and the economics of sports and entertainment. He has written over 100 articles and authored, co-authored or edited 16 book-length studies.

He has been a member of our Board of Directors since June 2019. From July 2016 to March 2020, he was the Managing Partner of BDO USVI, LLC (a full-service accounting and advisory firm). Mr. Engerman commenced his career in various accounting, auditing and advisory roles for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young and Capgemini (now part of Ernst & Young). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Accounting from Howard University in Washington, DC and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Personal Life

John Engerman is a multi-faceted professional who has spent most of his career in public accounting and advisory services. He is currently the Managing Partner of BDO USVI, LLC, a full-service firm located in St. Thomas, USVI.

Aside from his professional and academic life, Engerman is also an active community member. He has been involved with numerous non-profit organizations, including the American Youth for Democracy and the National Museum of Health and Medicine. He has also made a name for himself in the theatre industry, performing and directing a number of musicals at ACT. He is also the co-author of several books and has written a number of articles for national publications. Aside from his extensive professional career, he has also found time to enjoy his family and travel the world.
