John Mallia

John Mallia is an American composer and music professor specializing in electroacoustic/acousmatic composition as well as multimedia installation. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work within these fields.

He is the Director of the Electronic Music Studio at New England Conservatory in Boston and a faculty member since 2005. His expertise includes electroacoustic, acousmatic and live electronic music composition courses.

Early Life and Education

John Mallia lived and worked throughout the United States. His primary profession was as a General Contractor in the Tri-State area and various parts of Florida.

He has always put his family first and strived to give them the highest quality of life. As a dedicated father, husband, and brother, he has done his utmost to provide for them.

Early childhood is an incredibly important period of brain development. Research shows that the first 1,000 days can make or break a child’s chances at school and in the workplace, which is why the UNESCO World Conference on Education for All recognized early childhood care and education as essential to promote inclusive development, gender equality and social cohesion.

Professional Career

Recent Brandeis PhD graduate Mallia is a composer and musicologist living and working in Boston. He directs the Electronic Music Studio and serves on the Composition faculty at New England Conservatory. His work draws inspiration from spatial constructs and concepts as well as ritualistic practices that mark thresholds between states of existence or awareness.

He is a staff engineer at Amsden’s Consulting Service, serving as a consultant to the nuclear power industry for ASME commercial nuclear NQA-1 programs and manufacturing. With extensive expertise in design, fabrication, construction, startup/maintenance/operations/quality assurance/project management of large utility and municipal nuclear power plants he is an invaluable asset.

Simon hired Mallia in January 2018, but when the county Personnel Department discovered he was on their payroll, they denied his application for civil service status.

Achievements and Honors

John Mallia is an accomplished composer in electroacoustic music. His compositional approach draws inspiration from spatial constructs and concepts as well as his fascination with presence and ritual.

He has received numerous awards and grants for his work, demonstrating his dedication to music pedagogy. A member of the Composition Faculty at the New England Conservatory, he directs their Electronic Music Studio.

He serves on the Composer’s Committee of the International Computer Music Association and is a member of the Society for Electroacoustic Music in America. His compositions have been performed internationally by organizations such as Takefu International Festival in Japan, Gaudeamus Foundation in The Netherlands and New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival.

Personal Life

He has a special passion for electroacoustic, acousmatic and live electronic music as well as multimedia installation and chamber music with an electroacoustic element. Additionally, he enjoys teaching and collaborating with students across diverse genres of electronic music and sonic art.

He currently resides and works in Boston. He holds a BSBA in Accounting & Finance from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, as well as an MBA in Organizational Development from Franklin University. Furthermore, he has been certified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 2004.
