John Milbourne was a distinguished high school basketball coach in his native Virginia. He compiled a 301-99 record and later coached at Hampton University for six years and Elizabeth City State University for three.

He led Booker T. Washington to the 1965 Virginia Interscholastic Association state championship. He also helped the school to seven district titles and a region title.

Early Life and Education

Milbourne grew up in Norfolk. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and played basketball for the school. He also coached the team for 17 seasons, amassing 307 wins and coaching some of Hampton Roads’ finest players.

He guided the school into the era of integrated sports. His teams won the Virginia Interscholastic Association state championships in 1965 and 1967.

In addition to his coaching career, Milbourne was active in the community. He was a member of the Hampton Roads African American Sports and West Virginia State halls of fame. He served on the board of directors for the National Black Sports Foundation.

Professional Career

Milbourne began his professional career as a player in the Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for six teams, including the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies.

He also served as a coach and scout. He threw right-handed and stood 6 feet (1.8 m) tall.

He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Technology, Sydney from 2002 to 2010. During his time at UTS, Professor Milbourne has demonstrated exceptional leadership and he has ensured that the University is well positioned in the Australian and international education and research landscapes.
