John Southwick, one of the United Methodist Church’s national staff members, lives below the mountains in Green Bluff, a rural community in western Idaho. He works from home most days but also travels throughout the US to share resources.

John Southwick had earned the respect and admiration of his community for over four decades. On March 29th at UVM-CVPH Medical Center, with his family by his side, he passed away peacefully with them by his side.

He was a graduate of Champlain Central School and Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. Afterwards, he earned his degree from Yale University.

After graduating, he joined the US Army and was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Vermont, where he quickly gained a loyal following as an esteemed General Practitioner.

John was a respected general practitioner in the area for more than four decades, dedicated to helping others. As an attentive physician who always took time to listen to his patients, his passion was truly his calling.

Achievements and Honors

John Southwick was an accomplished athlete who excelled in tennis. While playing for Cal State Hayward Pioneers in the early eighties, he earned all-conference recognition at both No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.

He then transitioned into coaching and tennis professional, working at Orinda Country Club in Berkeley, CA. Through his work there, he has helped place over sixty players into collegiate tennis programs as well as coaching an NCAA doubles champion, two world-ranked players and four No. 1-ranked juniors.

He was an active community member in Champlain, MA. He served on the Three Steeples Methodist Church council, was a volunteer firefighter and served on the Board of Directors for Champlain Public Library.

Personal Life

John Southwick was a respected member of his community. He served on the Champlain Library Board of Directors and Three Steeples United Methodist Church’s board as well.

His professional career included family medicine in Champlain, New York. Additionally, he served on the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Board of Directors and was an active participant in his local school physicians association.

Despite the persecution he endured, he remained active in his community. Additionally, he enjoyed running and walking the roads around Champlain.

His life was filled with joy and love for his family and friends. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan, they have three daughters: Deborah Ensign (William) of Westfield; Patricia Ensign of Manchester, NH; Dr. Allison LaRusso and her husband John of Boylston. Additionally, there are three stepsons: David Knight (Karen); Matthew and Jeremy Knight.
