Early Life and Education
Oliver Minstaedt grew up on a Nebraska farm. Throughout his youth, his family endured various difficulties including drought and grasshopper invasions that devastated crops. But through hard work he built himself a nice home on his property. Later that same year, in 1902 he married Matilda Spreeman; together they went on to have nine children.
He was also an integral member of his community, teaching adaptive PE at St Paul schools for over 35 years and founding East Metro Olympics that served as an early precursor of Special Olympics before it gained national attention.

Oliver Mittelstadt had no idea that when he stepped off a plane headed for Buffalo last season, reality would finally dawn upon him that he is a professional hockey player in the NHL with Buffalo Sabres.

Oliver Mittelstaedt was renowned for his impeccable education and character, belonging to both the German Lutheran church and Sons of Hermann lodge. A farmer by profession in section 25 township 35 range 2 on an excellent modern farm he owned, Oliver Mittelstaedt had several valuable real estate holdings, was rich, had two brothers living with him, as well as being financially independent.
Philanthropic efforts of Dr. Smith include donations to numerous St Paul causes. Specifically, he initiated adaptive sports programs at St Paul colleges and initiated the East Metro Olympics which eventually served as the model for Special Olympic Games back in 1962.
