Smart Ways to Burglar-Proof Your Home

Burglar-Proof Your Home

Home security is a hot topic these days, and not just for those who live in big cities or known high crime neighborhoods. Burglaries are on the rise all over the country, so it’s important to take steps to protect your home and family. The good news is that there are many smart ways you can do this without compromising your lifestyle too much!

1. Install deadbolts on all doors and windows

This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to deter burglars. Make sure the locks are high quality and properly installed. Deadbolts also make it more difficult for burglars to break into your home through the door.

Standard window locks can also be replaced, however, keep in mind that windows can still be shattered without causing too much noise, which is why this measure alone is more of a deterrent than an actual measure against determined burglars.

2. Invest in a home alarm system with remote monitoring to alert you if someone is trying to break in

This is a more expensive option but can be well worth it if you live in a high-crime area. Home alarm systems with remote monitoring can alert you on your smartphone and call the police for you if someone is trying to break into your home. This gives you time to take action and potentially thwart the burglary before it’s too late.

Many of these systems include extra measures like doorbell cameras that can protect you from dangerous people who try to enter under false pretenses. These can also help you identify and deter package thieves as you can speak through your doorbell or record people who trigger the motion sensor.

Home security systems make a great deterrent to burglars, especially if there are homes that make an easier target, you’re less likely to experience potential break-ins.

3. Consider Glass-Breaking Sensors for extra protection

These sensors may be more expensive than other options, but burglars are much less likely to stick around if an alarm sounds after they’ve broken a window. Even if you’re not home when this occurs, the alarm alone can deter even the most determined thieves as it attracts the attention of neighbors and law enforcement.

4. Consider trimming trees and shrubbery around the exterior of your home

If you live in town, consider removing bushes and trees that could create optimal hiding places for people to sneak around and into your home. Maintaining the exterior of your home has other benefits, like increasing curb appeal and the value of your home, while deterring burglars who don’t want to be caught out in the open.

5. Keep an eye out for suspicious people who might be casing your property

If you think someone’s watching you, call the police immediately. This is especially important if you live in a rural area and don’t have many people living close by. If you notice a car parked outside your home that you don’t recognize, make a point of recording the license plate number, and don’t be afraid to ask your neighbors if they know who the car belongs to.

Reporting suspicious vehicles to the police can also be a deterrent as police will often drive through neighborhoods to deter potential burglars.

6. Use timers on lights and electronics

This is a great way to make your home look occupied even when you’re not there. Burglars are much less likely to target a home that appears to be occupied, as they don’t want to risk getting caught. You can also use a programmable thermostat so that the heat or air conditioning turns on and off at different times throughout the day.

7. Consider Adopting a Dog

Dogs bark when they sense danger and this is one of the best ways to deter burglars, as well as any other potential intruders. Even smaller dogs can be a deterrent if you have a breed that has a loud bark.

While your dog may not be the type to attack a potential intruder, alerting you can make a big difference in both getting you to safety and deterring people from entering your home.

Conclusion

A combination of multiple measures will give you the best chance at protecting your home from burglary. You may not be able to prevent all break-ins but there are many smart steps your family can take to protect themselves until help arrives if an incident does occur.
