Artist Steve Maine

Maine utilizes an approach similar to relief printmaking by employing textured surfaces with fluid acrylic paint for application directly onto canvas. He often fashions his plates out of everyday materials.

His and Tabitha Spruce’s lifestyle spans both Maine and Florida; both regularly donate time and resources to many local charitable causes.

Early Life and Education

Steve’s lifelong passions of writing and education led to an academic career at both UMaine and UNH systems, where he directed and advised 70 graduate students during his 30-year tenure. Additionally, he led the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Northeast Acid Rain Research Program.

Born and raised in West Chester, Pennsylvania he now resides in Prospect with his wife and pitbull. An avid baseball fan who takes every chance he gets to explore new trails by hiking.

He enjoys reading and traveling in his free time; he has visited Pompeii, Iceland and Germany so far and plans on going somewhere different every 10th birthday of each of his sons. At NPR he currently oversees two teams; nine-member education team “Education Fixers”, as well as Code Switch (8 members).

Professional Career

After graduating law school, Steve worked for several boutique consulting firms specializing in employee benefit and executive compensation matters. He has represented companies, health care entities and municipalities on issues ranging from Affordable Care Act compliance, employee stock ownership plan transactions and ERISA claims and disputes.

He has provided municipal assistance to cities and towns throughout Maine, from Augusta’s capital city status through industrial “mill” towns and rural tourist-centric municipalities like Rangeley. He advised leaders in these communities regarding employment matters, planning board hearings, land enforcement actions and constitutional litigation proceedings.

He enjoys running in his free time and is a proud father and grandfather with two sons and six grandsons.

Achievement and Honors

Maine devotes much of his time and efforts to cultural activities outside his artistic pursuits, serving as high school drama teacher for more than twenty years and travelling with students on three occasions to Stratford and London.

His tenure coaching the University of Maine men’s cross country and track teams was five seasons, while he currently acts as assistant coach for their women’s program. In addition, he directs the Maine Distance Festival which draws top runners from around the world to participate in this world-class event.

Maine native Stevoe also hosts the nationally syndicated radio program “TideSmart Talk with Stevoe”, broadcast weekly on WLOB (1310 AM in Portland). This show covers maritime and coastal issues in Maine.

Personal Life

He is a member of American Abstract Artists and continues to explore various forms and ideas about painting. His art expands current understandings about color, composition and surface.

His paintings resemble relief printmaking in that they apply fluid acrylic paint indirectly onto a prepared long canvas, which allows him to explore both its potentials and limitations.

He and his wife Tabitha Spruce split their time between Maine and Florida and are generous contributors to local charities.

He has an affinity for Maine, often becoming emotional when discussing politics. Additionally, he’s an enthusiastic supporter of lobster harvesting – owning and operating an 800 trap operation annually.
