The 2011 New York Knicks Roster

The Knicks had a tumultuous 2011-12 season. The Knicks went through an impetuous roster construction, but their schedule was packed full of back-to-backs. They played 18 games in nine consecutive days, with one game on a day off. They opened the season by beating the Boston Celtics 106-104 in overtime. Carmelo Anthony poured in 37 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Carmelo Chandler went head-to-head with Kevin Garnett and handed out six Ts. The Knicks lost 11 of their 13 first January games, and only one win was recorded.

As the team struggled to find a starting point guard, the Knicks traded for a former Sacramento Kings player. Jerome Jordan, a 2nd round pick in 2010, signed with the Knicks and played for a few weeks. He was then traded to the Knicks in a trade before the lockout shortened the 2011/12 season. He was a key player in Jeremy Lin’s hyped up season and will likely be a key part their future.

While the Knicks had to make do without Amare Stoudemire, the Knicks managed to make a decent roster with only one rookie pick, Iman Shumpert. The 17th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Shumpert quickly carved out a solid career as a defensive guard. During his rookie year, he emerged as the best on-ball defender in the Knicks guard rotation. His poor shooting ability makes him limited as a defensive role player in the modern NBA.

Jared Jeffries and Connor Lade were also new to the 2011 New York Knicks roster. Both were relatively unknown in Europe. Both were acquired by the Knicks in a trade that saw them move some of their unwanted assets. Jared Jeffries, a veteran point guard for the Knicks, was also acquired by them. These two veterans could be used as bench players. This provided a backup pair for the team in case of injury.

Another newcomer, Kaku, arrived in New York as a relative unknown. His star shot up after he arrived in New York. The Knicks are hoping he doesn’t follow Lin’s path post-Knicks, which led to an inexperienced post-Knicks career. He’ll save the Knicks and help them avoid disaster. He averaged 6.3 rebound and 3.6 assists, in addition to his 20.6-point average.

The 2011 New York Knicks roster is a mixed bag. They have some players who played well in the Red Bulls, but are not as versatile as the Knicks. One of the Knicks’ biggest problems last season was their lack of defense. The Knicks’ defense was poor and their attackers were inept. Jeremy Lin was a bright spot on the 2011/12 Knicks, but he had to miss most of the season because of a torn meniscus.
