The Master National Retriever Club

The Master National Retriever Club is a national organization that has impacted the sport of retrieving by providing a venue for retriever hunters. These trials have a strict set of criteria for participating retrievers. The Master National hunt test is held annually in a different part of the country. For more information, visit the Master National website. To attend a Master National event, participants must be registered members of the club.

The RRRC welcomes both novice and experienced hunters as well as competitors in hunt tests. Members may own any breed of retriever, including Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Spaniels. Sessions include lunches during nice weather. Flyers are also used by the RRRC at its events to allow each dog to practice at a level that is appropriate for their skill level. The RRRC also supports the development of future judges by hosting judge seminars and handler clinics.

The Master National Retriever Club will bring the AKC Master National Hunting Test to Roseburg, Oregon in 2022. The Umpqua Valley Retriever Club is serving as the host club, having hosted the competition last year. More than 600 canine teams will compete in the event, showcasing their intelligence and hunting skills. The tests will be conducted on six Douglas County properties over the course of eight to nine days. These tests have been awarded the AKC hunt test’s highest ranking.

To qualify for Master Nationals, you must be a member of one of the MNR member clubs. You must have a Master Hunter title from the AKC and have successfully passed at least 6 Master hunt test events in the member clubs. Your dog must be AKC registered and at least one MH title. If your dog is domiciled in Canada, it must have competed in four CKC Master hunt test events.

To get started with retrieving, you should watch a DVD produced by Bill Hillmann. In the DVD, you can watch three different retriever puppies being trained. Bill emphasizes balance and creating habits for retrieving. For success, it is important to have a good relationship with your dog. If the owner is not familiar with the basics of retrieving, the dog will not learn how to retrieve. He must first be treated with respect. The Master National Retriever Club is a nonprofit organization.
