The Old English name “Rich Guard” comes from the words meaning “rich” and ‘guard’. This name was used by many Anglo-Saxon kings, and has been popular in English history ever since. Saint Edward the Confessor, a king known for his justice, popularized the name as a popular choice for a male child. Later, the Plantagenet king Henry III named his son after him and the name survived to this day. This tradition has continued throughout England’s history, as seven subsequent kings have been named after the saint.
