Tim McVay – Coach of the Los Angeles Rams

Tim McVay, a former college football player, played for the Indiana Hoosiers between 1974 and 1978. He originally came to the university as a quarterback, but switched to defensive back his senior season. He was a letterman on the team that went 1-10 and later he captained teams that finished third and fourth in Big Ten in 1976, 1977. As a redshirt freshman, McVay broke his ankle early in the season. After two surgeries and extensive therapy, he never played college football again.

McVay’s father, Tim, played for IU and was a two-time captain. Tim also played for the Miami Hurricanes as an offensive coordinator, calling 43 plays in 12 personnel. As a player, he recorded 178 tackles and recorded a fumble recovery and defensive touchdown. The father-son duo’s athletic talent made him an excellent coach, and Sean McVay is now the head coach of the Rams.

McVay has held many job openings throughout his career and worked under many great NFL coaches. In 2007, he was an assistant coach to Jon Gruden. He then joined the University of Florida Tuskers in the role of wide receivers coach. After joining the NFL, he was a tight ends coach under Mike Shanahan. McVay was Washington’s lead tight ends coach from 2011 to 2013. He was then hired as offensive coordinator when Jay Gruden was looking for a new coach. While he worked in Washington, he met Veronika Khomyn, who is now his wife.

The father-son duo lives in Kettering, OH. Tim’s father, John, is a former general manager of the San Francisco 49ers. His grandfather, John, coached in the NFL during the 1970s. His father, John, was a general manager of San Francisco 49ers’ teams in the 1980s and 1990s. Sean McVay has enjoyed coaching success at a young age, having previously worked for WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio.

McVay was a coach at the University of Dayton for eight seasons after his time with the 49ers. He later coached the Memphis Southmen in the World Football League. He kept in touch his former players. Willie Spencer was one of the Giants’ players he coached. Spencer played for him in his NFL career. During the 1980 season, he was the general manager for the San Francisco 49ers. He was 52 when he won his first Super Bowl, and 64 when he won his second Super Bowl.

After serving as director of football operations for the San Francisco 49ers from 1980 to 1995, Tim McVay was named vice president of football operations. He was instrumental in the team’s five Super Bowl appearances. His father, John McVay, took a front-office position with the team and helped the team win its fifth Super Bowl. McVay’s son Sean is currently serving as head coach of the team, and Kelly is expected to interview for the job.
