IMSA’s GTD category continues to deliver the most entries of any series. While the GT3 regulations are largely tailored for privateers, many manufacturers are building factory GTLM cars as well. Most Porsches, Ferraris, and BMWs compete in GT3 as well as GTD. Aston Martin’s GTLM chassis also competes in GT3. The Corvette is the only factory GTLM entrant that does not have a GT3 variant.
The GTL M cars are a cross-section of the evolution of the rapid combustion engine. Previously, these cars made ear-splitting screams, but those days are gone. The sounds of a GT car are now more like the flutter of a wastegate than an ear-splitting roar. The new era of performance motorsports is a thrilling one.

The GTD regulations were adopted by IMSA in 2006 and remain the highest-ranked category for privateer cars. While the new rules are designed to cater to privateers, the majority of manufacturers who build factory GTLM cars also make GT3 models. In addition to BMW, Ferrari, and Porsche, Aston Martin’s GTLM chassis also competes in GTD. The only factory GTLM entrant that does not produce a GT3 variant is the Corvette.
There are many other differences between the two classes. The GT1 class has more horsepower than the GT2 class, while the LM has a more aggressive and more powerful engine. Unlike the GT2 category, the LM is also faster than the GT1 class. Its yellow-tinted headlights make it easy to spot at night. The ACO has a lot of restrictions, but the M8 has more horsepower than the M6 and has a heftier price tag.
ACO’s GTD class rules are very similar to the GT3 regulations, but they differ slightly. The ACO has adopted more regulations to allow more development of aerodynamics in the LM class. For instance, an LM car can be heavier than a GT1 car. However, the LM class is faster than the GT1 class. Its engine makes the noises that are characteristic of the LM.
As its name implies, the GTLM class is the most expensive of all the GT1 categories. Its yellow-tinted headlights are easily recognized by onlookers, making it easy to detect a GTE at night. If the front end of the car is in white, it is a GT3. In other words, it’s the same color as a GT1.
The GTE class’s regulations are different from those for the GT3 category. In IMSA’s GTD category, the manufacturer’s name is a trademark. The GTLM is a trademark of the brand, and it is often difficult to differentiate a GTLM from a GT3 by its name. Its namesake is the most expensive, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the two.
The GTD class is the cheapest category of Grand Touring. In GTD competitions, most of the vehicles are built with production engines. A Lexus RC F GT3 is powered by a 5.4-liter V8. An Audi R8 LMS GT3 has a 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Both of these cars are very similar in weight and speed.
Besides the V8 engine and the GT2 engine, the GTLM car is also noisy and has a ‘farting’ sound. The sound is a sign that the GTLM car is undergoing an aggressive phase. Several features of the GTLM car are a part of the race. This type of GT racing class is considered a high-end class.
