Sometimes it’s not necessarily what you don’t do or do to your skin. The weather where you live is definitely a factor. If you live in a place where it has dry, cold or low-humidity climates it can cause you to have dry skin. Dry skin can also be caused by your age and your lifestyle. Those who are ages 40 or older are more prone to have dry skin. Activities that you do that require you to be outdoors all the time can also be a cause. Also if you have a job or a hobby that you like doing that requires you to immerse yourself in water all the time that may be a cause. When on vacation, or if you really just often swim in chlorinated pools that may be a factor. So if you notice that your skin is kind of dry, try to improve it.
How will you know if you have dry skin? Sometimes just by the look of it, you can tell but here is a list of symptoms to look out for:
- If you feel tightness on your skin
- If your skin looks and feels rough
- Itching can be a sign
- Slight to severe flaking, scaling, or peeling
- If there are fine lines or cracks that are prone to bleeding on your skin
- Gray and ashy skin
- Redness

- Irritating dryness and itching
- You have open sores or infections from scratching

Although dry skin is pretty harmless, if not cared for dry skin may it may lead to skin diseases such as:
- Eczema. Developing this condition will cause you to experience excessive dryness which can then lead to activation of the diseases, causing redness, cracking, and inflammation.

So what can you do to prevent yourself from having dry skin?
Number one is to always moisturize. Using moisturizing soap can help maintain healthy skin, applying moisturizing lotion regularly also keeps your skin healthy. Limiting yourself to water exposure will also help. Limit your bath or shower time to only 1 minute or less. Also, avoid using hot water. And if you can, try to bathe no more than once a day. If the weather is cold, cover as much skin as possible. If it’s winter where you leave make sure to wear a scarf, hat, and gloves when you go out. Windbreakers are helpful when it’s just windy. If you’re doing chores where you will need to touch water or cleansers use rubber gloves.
All in all, it definitely takes effort and proper knowledge to keep our bodies healthy. Some of the health conditions we experience with our body are unavoidable so prevention is always better than cure.
