Bui’s meticulous portraits of Malian percussionist Baye Kouyate, author Sean Wilsey and documentary photographer Susan Meiselas demonstrate an expansive praxis encompassing art, culture and society. Her Symphony #2 (for Agnes Gund) presents a formalist duality in which linear likenesses are juxtaposed against nonrepresentation.

As one of Philadelphia, PA’s premier Pharmacists, Henry Bui is dedicated to improving patient quality of life. He understands the significance of communication, safety and trust when working with patients.

Early Life and Education

Bui was born to a Vietnamese father and American mother in Dallas, Texas and experienced poverty early on; yet she persevered to improve the circumstances of her family and was always encouraged by both sets of parents to use books as sources for learning.

Bui’s memoir, written in a comics format inspired by Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” and Marjane Satrapi’s “Persepolis,” explores generations of her family’s history in Vietnam before their migration to the US. Selected as part of UCSB Reads 2019, Bui’s work will be used across more than two dozen courses throughout winter and spring quarters at UC Santa Barbara.

He has extensive management consulting experience advising F500 companies on growth strategy and operations, with an expertise in no-code application development and automation. Prior to becoming Director of Project Sales for Creative Engineering New York he played hockey with Drumheller Dragons of Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

Achievement and Honors

Bui was one of the top students at Henry and earned the prestigious Patriot of the Year award. With an outstanding 4.11 GPA and multiple clubs he led, he became an inspiration to both peers and coaches alike – winning him this accolade by embodying all three pillars of being a Patriot.

Bui’s book has been chosen for UCSB Reads 2019, an initiative featuring faculty talks, book discussions and exhibitions throughout winter and spring quarters.

On April 25th, UCSB’s Chancellor’s Office and Library will welcome Bui to Campbell Hall for an open question-and-answer session with students.

Personal Life

Henry Bui is a private banking advisor in Lloydminster, Alberta who believes in building trust through reliability. To do this, he utilizes open communication channels and collaborate approaches while drawing upon his experiences as a former basketball player to impart lessons of teamwork, time management, and accountability for his clients.

Thi Bui’s Eisner Award-nominated graphic memoir The Best We Could Do chronicles generations of her family history in Vietnam, their flight after Saigon fell and their relocation to California. Bui draws upon Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis for inspiration while exploring themes such as war, immigration and intergenerational trauma. Bui’s memoir has recently been selected as part of UCSB Reads 2019 selection and will be used as a text in over two dozen courses during Winter/Spring quarters 2019.
