______________

Q: What first got you interested in off-roading and motorsports?

DAVID VEPRASKAS: I’ve always loved just being outside, and off-roading gave me a way to reach places you’d never get to in a regular car. It started pretty simple. I bought my first Land Cruiser and took it into the woods just to see what it could do. The more I learned about reading the terrain, trying different driving techniques, and planning routes, the more it became my main hobby. What used to be a quick afternoon drive turned into whole weekends of trail riding and camping in quiet, out-of-the-way spots. Once my boys got into it, the whole thing took on even more meaning. We get closer out there, and they learn how to respect nature and handle themselves with confidence.

Q: How did the Land Cruiser become your favorite off-road vehicle?

DAVID VEPRASKAS: Land Cruisers are tough, straightforward, and have their own personality. The older ones are built like tanks and can handle rough ground better than anything else I’ve driven. They’re also easy to work on, which makes the maintenance part of the fun. Over time, I’ve gotten into collecting and restoring them, and each one has its quirks. Sharing that with my sons has been a big part of it. They’ve learned how to drive the Cruisers on the trails, take care of them, and fix things when they break. It turns the whole trip into a team effort, and we’ve made a lot of good memories that way.

Q: What does a normal overlanding weekend look like for you?

DAVID VEPRASKAS: We load up the truck with camping gear, water, and the recovery tools we might need. Then we pick a route that has a mix of challenge and easy, quiet stretches where we can stop and take in the scenery. Setting up camp is part of the fun. We look for a spot near a stream or an open clearing, build a fire, and cook something simple. Those weekends are our chance to disconnect from screens, slow down, and enjoy being outside. We watch wildlife, sit around the fire, hike a little, and just enjoy the time together.

Q: How do dirtbikes fit into your time outside with your family?

DAVID VEPRASKAS: Dirtbikes bring in a different kind of thrill. They make you focus, stay balanced, and think fast. My boys picked it up quick, and it’s been great watching them grow more confident with every ride. We choose trails that are safe but still have technical parts so we can all practice new skills. Riding as a group teaches patience, respect for safety, and how to work through a challenge without rushing. It’s a hands-on way for us to spend time together, and it blends right in with our off-roading trips.

Q: What’s your advice for people who are new to off-roading?

DAVID VEPRASKAS: Start small and really get to know your vehicle. A stock setup is plenty for most beginner trails. Carry basic recovery gear, plan your route, and try to go with someone who knows what they’re doing. That guidance helps a lot early on. Begin with shorter trips so you can see how your vehicle reacts to different terrain, practice navigation, and get used to the feel of off-roading. Preparation matters, but so does patience. Every ride teaches you something, and over time, those small lessons stack up. Before long, you’ll have a hobby that gives you adventure, time outside, and experiences you can share with family and friends.
