Interview with Toronto’s Kent Chin on the Importance of Fitness & Nutrition Consistency

Toronto’s Kent Chin

Kent Chin is from Markham, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, and is a disciplined individual with a focus on self-improvement. He sees physical health as an essential contributor to mental strength and happiness. He incorporates fitness routines into his daily life, along with hobbies like martial arts, cooking, and personal finance. Kent is a big believer in consistency and sees keeping fit as a critical part of creating structure and balance.

Q: What is your exercise routine these days?

KENT CHIN: I am currently doing a 5-day split, with strength training on 3 days and either cardio, conditioning or some kind of functional work on the other 2 days. I typically break strength days up into push, pull and legs, with compound lifts such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. On cardio day, I’ll run, bike, or do circuit training for endurance and agility. There’s also stretching and mobility work to aid recovery and prevent injuries. Consistency is key for me, but I also adapt if I feel overtrained.

Q: What makes you want to work out consistently?

KENT CHIN: I try to stay true to myself by thinking of fitness as something I owe myself. It’s a means of knowing what is important and what truly matters, especially when life becomes hectic. I schedule my workouts into my week, as I would a meeting. Some days I have low energy or something comes up, but I try to still show up and do something, even if it’s just a shorter round. In time, that consistency generates momentum and keeps me on track.

Q: How would you describe your approach to fitness?

KENT CHIN: When it comes to fitness, I believe in sustainable health. I train to be strong, mobile, and injury-proof, not just hit numbers in the gym. That means emphasizing good form, controlled progression, and movements that transfer to real-world function. I’ve learned that recovery, sleep, and stress management are all just as important as the workouts themselves. I want my workouts to support a lifestyle that makes me feel energized, not depleted.

Q: How does nutrition fit into your life?

KENT CHIN: Diet is an important part of my lifestyle. I eat whole, nutrient-dense foods and stay away from anything that makes me crash or feel inflamed. Cooking for myself helps me stay on track because I know exactly what goes into my meals. I don’t follow strict diet plans, but I am mindful of portions and balance. I give my body what it needs to train hard and recover well.

Q: What words of advice can you offer to someone about to start their fitness journey?

KENT CHIN: Keep it straightforward and work towards consistency. You don’t have to have the perfect plan or the perfect gear, just start with what you have and get better over time. Keep tabs on your progress, celebrate the small successes, and find out how your body reacts to different styles of training. It can take a while to see results, but the act of doing it breeds confidence and resilience. Regardless, the key is to show up consistently and be patient with your growth.
