John Cirelli

Cirelli Foods, a family-owned business founded in 1946, began selling Italian foods door-to-door. Through the years it expanded to supply mom and pop grocers with everything from meats to pasta.

After a long run, the company was acquired by Perkins – an established Taunton importer and distributor. Now the two businesses are part of one unified, privately-owned family operation.

Early Life and Education

John Cirelli was born in Union City, New Jersey in January 1925 and a member of the Italian-American community. He was horrified when he heard about Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor that precipitated American involvement in World War II.

He joined the US Army Air Forces in June 1943 and completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Subsequently, he attended gunnery school and combat crew training.

In 1945, Cirelli was assigned to a B-17 bomber called Happy Warrior and flew missions over Germany. On one mission, his plane was hit by antiaircraft fire.

Cirelli returned to Sudbury, Ontario, where he lived in a camouflaged Quonset hut.

Professional Career

Undrafted since 2008, Cirelli has enjoyed a storied and successful professional career. Currently playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League, he continues to make waves.

He was named to the Stanley Cup All-Star team this season and is a finalist for the Selke Award, given to the best American-born NHL player. Additionally, he works at Coface Group – a global leader in credit insurance – where he provides legal counsel to North American management teams on matters such as employment law, compliance, litigation management and real estate law.

Cirelli was an integral part of the Lightning’s run to the Stanley Cup title last season. Not only did he lead the team in hits and take more shots than any other forward, but he also finished second in blocked shots during the playoffs.

He has coordinated multiple Hemophilia Walks and contributed more than $750,000 towards medical research for those affected by bleeding disorders. As a member of both the Massachusetts chapter of the American Association for Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders as well as Cirelli School of Music’s production course, his family has made an immense impact in this community for over ten years – and continues to make a difference today!
