John Purves is a renowned British television presenter best known for his work on Blue Peter. Additionally, John has had an ongoing affinity with dogs and dog shows.

He has worked as a TV presenter, dog trainer and motivational speaker. Additionally, he is known for his roles in several television soap operas and sitcoms.

Early Life and Education

John Purves was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from MIT in 1918 and then went on to earn his master’s in mechanical engineering the following year (1920).

At a young age, he worked in international banking and traveled extensively. His experiences, combined with meetings with businessmen like Walter Wriston (the future CEO of First National City Bank in New York), reinforced for him the power of shared economic interests to bring people together from different countries and cultures.

After returning home to Scotland, John was elected a Member of the First Directly Elected European Parliament in 1979. He found this exercise of international democracy inspiring, particularly with its opportunity to foster lasting friendships across political and ideological lines.

Professional Career

John Purves spent much of his professional life as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was renowned for his idealistic, self-effacing demeanor.

He began his career with the FBI in 1927 and rose to become Chief of its Chicago office.

After leaving the FBI, he married and had three sons before passing away in 1960.

As a member of the military, he flew combat missions in Vietnam aboard an F-4 Phantom and earned six “top gun” awards for navigational and bombing accuracy.

The tugboat Butterfield, constructed in Elizabeth, New Jersey during World War II and designated LT-145, served the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. Captain John Roen of Sturgeon Bay purchased it in 1956 and renamed it John Purves.

Another significant accomplishment for our local community is the restoration of the tugboat John Purves (formerly Butterfield), which has been a popular tourist attraction at Door County Maritime Museum since 2008. Since 2008, this ship has seen over 60,000 tours.

John Purves was a former professional hockey player for the Washington Capitals from 1990-91. During that time, he appeared in seven games throughout the National Hockey League with Washington.
