Safe Drivers: Driving Safely With Diabetes

Safe Drivers

Data shows that about 34 million adults have diabetes. This is a terrible disease, but it shouldn’t limit people. If you have diabetes, you need to take care of your health.

Uncontrolled diabetes can cause complications. The last thing you want is to experience complications while you’re driving. Diabetics can be safe drivers too if they know how to manage this condition.

Read this guide to learn how you can remain a safe driver even if you suffer from diabetes.

Prepare Before You Go on the Road

There are several things you’ll need to do before you even step foot in your car. The first thing you should do is check your blood sugar level.

It should be at least 80 mg/dL. If it’s lower than this, you should eat a small snack that contains 15 grams of carbohydrate. This can include 1/3 cup of granola or a cup of veggies.

Wait at least 15 minutes after eating the snack to check your blood sugar level again. If it’s at least 80 mg/dL, you’re good to go.

You should also take snacks with you. Keep them in your car in case you feel that your blood sugar starts to go down. Glucose tablets are a good idea too as they help your body absorb glucose quickly when you have low blood sugar.

You should always take your meter when you go out. Be mindful not to leave it in the car. Hot temperatures can damage it.

Wear a medical ID if you have one. It will inform first responders that you’re diabetic. If you don’t have a medical ID, consider carrying a piece of paper in your wallet with your emergency contact.

Actions to Take on the Road

You hope that you never experience any complications while driving. If you do experience complications, you must know what to do.

Diabetic hypoglycemia is a common complication that can arise. This can cause diabetics to feel sweaty, dizzy, or weak. It can also lead to blurred vision and sleepiness.

Once you start to experience any of these symptoms, you must pull over. Find a safe place where you can be out of the way of traffic. Eat one of your snacks or take a glucose tablet.

Check your blood sugar. If it’s in the normal range and you feel better, you can resume driving. If your blood sugar level isn’t going up, you should consider calling a loved one to come to pick you up.

It’s better if you leave your car behind and have someone come pick you up. Driving in such conditions is never a good idea.

Does your job require you to drive? If you happen to be a trucker or want to be one, you have to take the DOT physical exam. Diabetic drivers might be able to get an exemption.
